Either the incompetence of the police, or the stupidity of the witnesses is horrific. How can such an evil doing go without some amount of clarity in what happened and who was involved?
Mistakes are made in all walks of life. This sort of thing, though, happens more often than you would think...which is why we have the Constitution's Bill of Rights. All you have to do is Google "innocent sent to prison" or something similar to see how common it is. This is why we as Americans have historically been passionate about due process.
